Personally, I think Kutaragi went off the deep end sometime around the PSX--the precursor to the home entertainment hydra being dubbed the PS3. They are building a massive amount of hype around the the PS3 as being the end-all-be-all of living room convergence, MS is doing the same but at least they are remembering that games come first. Sony on the other hand looks to making it damn hard to play games on it with the conflicting statements that the HD is optional but to play games you need the HD. There's the potential for a lot of pissed off parents on Xmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa/Ramadan morning.

Out of the three, Nintendo is looking like it is keeping the gamer in mind. The revolution will play games. Period. they know that most people have a DVD player already or could get one for less than $50 USD. DVRs can be gotten through satellite and cable providers or built, so why include it? For that I applaud them. I want a game console that will play games. Not serve webpages or make me toast in the morning. Convergence is not always a good thing. Ever try to open a bottle of wine with a Swiss Army knife? Not pretty. Check out Revolution Fanboy for more deets.

As for me, my living room will likely shape up to be like this last generation, Nintendo first then MS. Sony is not likely to make it.

though they did mention a large hd (pluggable?) with possible linux connections. As well as a stab at the online community thing. I'd just about given up on the PS3 as too much bang for too much buck for what would have been a pure gaming system. Whereas a xbox with a linux distro hooked into the mythtv server was looking much more attractive. I'll have to look into whether the linux xbox distro is working on the 360. So for me the announcement dragged the PS3 out of last place to an indeterminate place awaiting more announcements.

Haven't heard enough about the revolution to know whether it meets that gamer cum media extender sort of thing.

But the kids are getting grumbly about the lack of a gaming console. They were prepared to donate all their cash from Christmas (well for a little while at least) to cover as much of a system as they could.

I think this is going to kill the PS3, games are going to be hard to create for 7 cores, (multithreading hell). Not to mention the price, ouch, $500 is a little steep for me and I would consider myself a hardcore gamer.

I think I have significantly more interest in the Revolution and 6 games for $500 instead.

Sony has one more problem from my perspective, the PS2 wasn't all that impressive technically, except for a few games (God of War, GT4). They have failed to deliver their promises for the last 2 consoles, why should this one be any different.

Good post by the way.
