This morning I got the sign off to purchase new hardware to build another server to replace the one currently driving the site. I spec’d a AMD64 3000+ 2GHz, with 1 GB of RAM, and a MSI K8NGM2-L motherboard; here’s the list over at Newegg. I’ll be sourcing a 400GB SATA from work and installing Ubuntu Dapper 64 to round things out. This should keep things humming for more than a couple of years at 0.333.
Downside? Likely I won’t get approval for any videogames or consoles this year but I’ll have a new server!

Drool . . .
Must . . . not . . . visit . . . newegg!
Great choices, btw! Performance:price is top notch.
I am so stoked to get this box up and running. I know you mentioned kitting another PC for the girlfriend to satisfy your Oblivion addiction, toss in a Radeon and you’ll be cooking!
I built her PC in December (Sempron 64 2800, 512, Nvidia 6600gt, nec dvd/cd burner, budget mobo w/ vid & sound, case, psu, keyboard, mouse for ~$350). With Oblivion came another 512 stick and now I’m wishing I didn’t skimp on the mobo so I could go pci-e. Somehow, her pc is turning into the racehorse and mine is starting to collect dust!
I’m definitely going to keep that MSI barebones kit in mind during the next go-round.
wow! i wish my boyfriend would build me a computer. he’s studying computer science/engineer, and he says that he hates computers. oh well, he’s going to help me figure out what’s wrong with my desktop computer.
Collecting dust?! For awhile there we had an arms race going with laptops: I’d buy one she would need a faster one. Back and forth like that until we realized the performance gain from switching OSes, now the war is who has the most customized desktop. The competition, it never ends.
Hates computers? LOL! Sounds like me, I was an Organizational Communications major but I really don’t like working with people, would rather study them like lab rats. ;-P
Building a PC these days is as easy as snapping together legos. I say go for it then parade it around in front of his CS friends!
I recently built two Sempron 2700 machines, they are awesome, so I imagine your machine will rock. Good looing specs on that machine, just need a Gforce 7900 to put in it, ;).
*Drool* Nothing like double the cost for graphics! I’m going to sneak an extra gig of RAM in there as a little extra somethin-somethin’ for myself, though. I figure I’ve been good.
I’ll be taking pictures as it has been a long time since I had a real build day and I’m sure it won’t be happening again until baby’s first box. What would that be Ubuntu 10.4?
