A Good Asskicking

Last week Gabriella was laid up with a cold.  A miserable cold that had the little girl suffering from a stuffy head, runny nose, and persistent post-nasal drip cough.  A cold that she eventually passed on to us and as if we did not have enough on our plate Mother Nature left us a nice sheet of ice to chip off the driveway while we both coughed and sneezed and ran fevers.  Last night, Gabi was so uncomfortable she demanded to sleep with Management, no amount of bribes or deal sweeteners would get her to sleep in her crib nor stay in my arms.  So here we both are, on the cusp of wellness only to find ourselves scrabbling for a foothold on health as we slide backwards due to a complete and total lack of sleep.

ah – i remember one time garrett was miserable…it was a friday and the doc’s office closed around 5 that day. he was probably 5 months at the time…would not stop crying. crying. more crying, unrepentent crying.

i called the doctor…”get him in” stat. so i drive up at 4:55. along the way, he falls asleep…so i called and said “he’s down…first time in (insert embellishment here) hours so i’m going to take him back home. get home…get two steps from his crib: crying. aaaayyyyyyyy!

big note re: daycare: do not enroll your kid into monday and friday daycare. get your folks to watch gabi those days. serious…they have so many off days scheduled for those days you feel like you’re funding somebody’s bad habit. i know you’re years off, but ask others and i’d be surprised if folks didn’t chime likewise.

We are extremely lucky that Gabi is being watched 5 days a week by both sets of parents–my in-laws are 2 miles away and my folks just 7. Now if I only had enough vacation time to stay home and sleep my way out of this cold we would be in better shape…
