Thinking of new layouts…

Kind of bored with my theme.  With it having been in service for nearly a year I’m feeling like it is time for something different but what.  I would like to clean things up a little bit and have the extraneous content a little more focused and reflective of what I’m up to these days: last.fm, flickr, Candied Pop.  This is where I scratch my head.

I’m a big fan of K2 and am a little loathe to leave it behind but I suppose I could hack it up to get something different.  Maybe three column (Bharath Kumar has a nice one) or a layout focused on the first post with a handful of others appearing in preview and the extraneous stuff crammed into the footer.

Stuff to chew on.

Candied Pop, she be waylaid.

Spending a better part of my morning frantically backing up Candied Pop, which is hosted by 1&1, as the site appeared to be in a downward spiral.  After a call to their tech support I found out that the database hosting was the issue and that “it is being looked into.”  As of now the site is slowly coming back to life, albeit sluggishly, and hopefully by noon it will be 100%.  It is times like these that I wish I had the cash to burn for some high speed line to the home so I could self-host it all.

Google Code Will Snarf Your Backups!

Some of your db passwords are belong to us,” reports Death By Comet.  The issue at hand is that Google Code will expose passwords stored in config files, such as wp-config.php and mt-db-pass.cgi, potentially resulting in headaches for site administrators.  Thankfully, the solution is just plain common sense: Don’t store your backups on your production server.  File that under: Sherlock, No Shit.  Anyway, don’t get caught with your pants around your ankles and move your backups to a secure location.

My name is Ribuala, I am 15yrs.I am doing a general finding out on blogs related to your theme.I have found yours most interesting. I would always like to give my opinion on matters I found on your blog. Is that ok? I like your blog.

Gee, I’m glad this bot has teased out my theme as I’ve been wondering myself what it is.  In case your curious it might be related to dental tourism.

Tweaking…

Made some very minor tweaks yesterday, moved the flickr feed below the header to create a ribbon but only for the home page (and library for some strange reason), on all the other pages it disappears and becomes the usual block in the side bar.  Though, I’m going to have to make note of all these tweaks as the last k2 upgrade meant me sitting cutting and pasting endlessly to get back to the look and feel I want.  However, this time I used a little smarts and made a sidebar-custom.php file to encapsulate the bulk of my fiddling.  One of these days I’ll get around to really hacking it up to a completely new look and feel.

Thanks MSN…

Due to some crummy indexing by MSN my succinct blurb about Steve Erwin generated way more traffic than was warranted. It seems that yesterday my site was in the top five results for Steve+Erwin+Video largely because MSN mashed together two posts. Here’s a screen grab of it finally depreciating off the front page.

MSN

My traffic moved from its comfortable and sleepy 120 unique hits per day to over 500–oddly enough right about dinner time–and I’m surprised my connection and server held up. Way to go, Redmond.

***Oh, and come to find out I’ve spelt his last name wrong.  Way to go, elwoodicious.***
